history

Clones was originally a monastic settlement founded by Saint Tighernach from the 6th century, which existed until the monasteries were dissolved by Henry VIII .

The city of Clones was particularly hard hit economically by the partition of Ireland in 1921, as it lies on the border with County Fermanagh , which is part of Northern Ireland . This cut off Clones from its economic catchment area, which is now in Northern Ireland.

Attractions

  • The sandstone cross on the Diamond in Clones is a combination of two separate high crosses from the Ulster group. It probably dates from the 9th century. It was probably moved here from its original place in the monastery complex at a later date. The cross fragments have a height of 4.57 m.
  • On the site of the former monastery there is an almost 23 m high round tower , which has been preserved except for the conical tip.
  • Near the round tower there is a stone shrine in the shape of a house, which according to tradition is said to contain the remains of Saint Tighernach.
  • Across the street is the ruin of a 12th century church.
  • To the north-west of the city is a motte built by the Normans in the 12th or 13th centuries
