Patrick Joseph McCabe , also Pat McCabe (born March 27, 1955 in Clones , County Monaghan ) is an Irish writer.

Life

By 2006 McCabe had published eight novels , a short story book , a drama, and a children's book . He was best known for his internationally acclaimed novel Der Schlächterbursche ( The Butcher Boy ) from 1992, which was filmed by Neil Jordan. The book, an alternative to the current romantic portrayals of Irish country life, describes the development of the teenager Francie Brady in a small Irish town from the broken home to the (only found) job in the slaughterhouse to a complete loss of reality including violent confrontation. Many readers found the consistent point of view from Francies own perspective as disturbing as well as the image of the “normal” small town world in Francies eyes. The book was shortlisted for the 1992 Booker Prize .

Some of his other novels have also been translated into German. McCabe was the only Irish author to be shortlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award 2008 with Winterwood .

He appeared in Bounty - Perrier's Bounty in 2009.
