Keith Pontus Åberg (born September 23, 1993 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish ice hockey player who has been under contract with HK Traktor Chelyabinsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since July 2020 and plays there in the position of left winger .
Career
Åberg played at the club in his hometown Djurgårdens IF from Stockholm when he was a junior . There he went through the junior departments of the club until 2012 and made his debut in the men's team in the 2010/11 season, which ran up in the Elitserien . In the summer of 2012 he was selected in both the KHL Junior Draft by SKA Saint Petersburg and the NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators in the second round.
The winger stayed there for another year after relegating Djurgården to Allsvenskan before moving to Färjestad BK in the summer of 2013, which is now called Svenska Hockeyligan . With Färjestad he was Swedish runner-up. In May 2014, Åberg signed a contract with the Nashville Predators from the National Hockey League , who used him in the following years on their farm team , the Milwaukee Admirals , in the American Hockey League . During the play-offs of the 2015/16 season , the Swede finally made his NHL debut when he played in two games in the second round. The following year he reached the Stanley Cup final with the Predators, but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins .
After almost four years in Nashville, the attacker was handed over to the Edmonton Oilers on the trade deadline in February 2018 , who in return sent Mark Letestu to Nashville. He ended the season with the Oilers and was finally signed by the Anaheim Ducks in October 2018 when he was supposed to be sent to the AHL via the waiver as part of the pre-season preparation . In Anaheim, the Swede was active until January 2019, when he was given to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Justin Kloos . He completed 22 games for the team and joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent in July 2019 . There he came with the exception of five NHL games but exclusively for the cooperation partner Toronto Marlies in the AHL.
In July 2020, the Swede returned to Europe and accepted an offer from HK Traktor Chelyabinsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL).
