Nick Bailen (born December 12, 1989 in Fredonia , New York ) is an American ice hockey player with Belarusian citizenship who has been under contract with HK Traktor Chelyabinsk in the Continental Hockey League since May 2017 .

Career

Nick Bailen began his career at St. Francis High School in his hometown before playing for Indiana Ice in the United States Hockey League from 2005 .

Between 2010 and 2013 he majored in Business and Management at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . Parallel to his studies, he played for the RPI Engineers , the ice hockey team at the technical university, in ECAC Hockey , a first-class division of the NCAA . He was elected several times to the All-Star- Team of the ECAC.

In March 2013 he received a trial contract (amateur try-out) with the Rochester Americans from the American Hockey League and completed 12 AHL games for the franchise, in which he collected 3 scorer points. He then decided to move to Europe and was signed by Tappara Tampere from the Finnish Liiga at the end of May 2013 . In November 2013 he won the Germany Cup with the national ice hockey team of the United States . With Tappara he reached the playoff final of the Liiga for the Finnish championship, in which his team failed at Kärpät Oulu . With 12 scorer points, he was one of the best scorers in the playoffs, was also the defender with the highest points in the playoffs and was consequently elected to the Liiga All-Star team.

After the 2013/14 season he was courted by several KHL clubs due to the performances shown in the Liiga and, after consulting Andy Chiodo and Cory Murphy, decided for the HK Dinamo Minsk . In October 2014 he extended his contract with Dinamo for two more years and is thus under contract with the KHL club until 2017.

On December 1, 2014, Bailen was granted Belarusian citizenship. According to the regulations of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF , Bailen will be eligible to play for the Belarusian national team from 2016 .
