mode

The ice hockey world championship was played in a total of six tournaments with different levels of participants. The top division played with ten teams, divisions I and II with twelve each and division III with eight participants.

In Divisions I and II, the twelve teams were divided into two groups of six teams. Division III played due to the return of the Republic of China (Taiwan) at one venue in two groups of four teams each.

The last placed in the relegation round rose from the top division to Group A of Division I. From the same, the first placed rose to the top division next year, while the sixth placed was relegated to Group B of Division I. In return, the winner of Division IB rose to Division IA. The last one from Division IB was also relegated to Division II A. The promotion regulation of Division IB with one promoted and relegated also applied to Division II A and II B. Due to the introduction of a qualification for Division III in the following year, two teams from Division III were relegated.

The top division of the U20 World Cup took place from December 26, 2016 to January 5, 2017 in the Canadian cities of Montreal and Toronto . The games were played at the Bell Center (21,273 seats) in Montreal and the Air Canada Center with 19,746 seats in Toronto. A total of 257,882 spectators attended the 30 tournament games, which corresponds to an average of 8,596 per game.

Ten national teams took part in the tournament, playing in two groups of five teams each. The two groups were composed according to the positions of the national teams at the 2016 World Cup according to the following key:

Group A (Montreal) Group B (Toronto)
FinlandFinland Finland (1) RussiaRussia Russia (2)
SwedenSweden Sweden (4) United StatesUnited States USA (3)
Czech RepublicCzech Republic Czech Republic (5) CanadaCanada Canada (6)

SwitzerlandSwitzerland Switzerland (9) LatviaLatvia Latvia (10)

The United States' U20 team defeated their neighbors and hosts Canada 5-4 after a shoot-out in the final of the tournament, thus winning their fourth U20 world title, the last time the Americans were world champions was in 2013. This left the Canadians only in second place. The Russian national junior team won the game for third place against Sweden 2-1 after extra time. As the loser in the relegation against the Finnish team, Latvia was relegated to Division I, Group A, while Belarus was promoted to the top division. The Finnish association dismissed head coach Jukka Rautakorpi after the first three preliminary round matches, all of which were lost, and replaced him with Jussi Ahokas , who had brought the Finnish U18 selection to the world championship title last year .

mode

After the group matches - each team played four of them - the preliminary round, the first four in each group qualified for the quarter-finals, which, like the other rounds, were then played in the knockout system. The fifth of the group games contested a relegation according to the " best-of-three " mode and determined who was relegated to Division I, Group A.

Relegation round

The relegation to Group A of Division I was carried out in the " best-of-three " mode. The Finnish U20 team prevailed with 2-0 wins against the Latvian representatives and thus remained in the top division. It was the first time in the history of the Junior World Championships that the defending champions played directly against relegation. As a consequence of the poor performance, the Finns had already separated from their entire coaching staff after the third round game and flown in the coaching team of the U18 national team.

The group B tournament was held from January 7th to 13th 2017 in Logroño , Spain . The games took place in the 1,000-seat Centro Deportivo Municipal Lobete and recorded an average of 214 visitors per game. The South Korean team achieved immediate promotion back to the A group with a 5-3 win in their last game against hosts Spain. The final phase of the game was dramatic. After the Asians had scored the 3-1 a good six minutes before the end, three goals fell between minutes 57:44 and 58:06. First, the Spaniards used a double majority, took their goalkeeper off the ice and scored the 2-3 goal with 6: 3 outfield players, but only seven game seconds later the Koreans, who were still outnumbered, restored the old gap. Another quarter of a minute later, the Spanish offspring met again to 3: 4. 20 seconds before the end of the game, the Spaniards took their goalkeeper off the ice again. Instead of the hoped-for compensation, however, they conceded an empty net goal , which meant the final decision in favor of South Korea. The Iberians had to make do with second place for the fourth time in a row (including three times on their own ice). After five defeats and only one point gain in the 5-6 defeat after extra time in the decisive game against Mexico, Australia had to accept relegation to Division III for the first time since promotion in 2010.

The Division III tournament was held from January 16-22, 2017 in Dunedin , New Zealand . The games took place in the 1,850 seat Dunedin Ice Stadium .

In contrast to the previous year, eight teams took part in the tournament this time, as in addition to the relegated People's Republic of China and the six remaining nations of the previous year, the Republic of China (Taiwan), which last participated in 2011, also provided a team. Therefore, the mode of the tournament was changed: the eight teams were divided into two groups of four. While the first two teams each crossed the semifinals, in which the participants of the final and game for third place were determined, the third and fourth-placed teams also played the participants in the placement games for fifth and seventh place crosswise.

The Turkish team, which had never played in Division II before, rose through a surprising 2-1 win in the final against the favored People's Republic of China. Relegation to qualification for Division III had to accept returners from the Republic of China (Taiwan) and South Africa.
