Yuri Ivanovich Babenko ( Russian Юрий Иванович Бабенко ; * 2. January 1978 in Penza , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player and now as a coach.

Career

Juri Babenko began his career as a hockey player with Krylya Sowetow Moscow , for whom he made his debut in the Russian Super League in the 1995/96 season , where he was on the ice in 21 times in his rookie year . He was then selected in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as a total of 51 players from the Colorado Avalanche . Initially, however, the attacker spent another year in Russia. After he had started the 1997/98 season again at Krylja Sowetow Moscow, he finished this with the second team of HK CSKA Moscow in the third-class Pervaya League .

In the summer of 1998, the left shooter went to North America, where he was active for one season for the Plymouth Whalers in Canada's top junior league, the Ontario Hockey League . For the next four years the Russian was on the ice for Colorado's farm team from the American Hockey League , the Hershey Bears . He also made his debut in the 2000/01 season in the National Hockey League , in which he remained pointless and punished in three games.

In the summer of 2002 Babenko returned to his Russian homeland, where he was signed by HK Dynamo Moscow , who became Russian champions at the end of the season . In the course of the season, however, he was transferred to their league rivals Chimik Woskressensk . Two years in the super league at HK MWD Tver followed before the center was signed by the reigning Russian champions HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk before the 2007/08 season . With Magnitogorsk he won the IIHF European Champions Cup in January 2008 . The 2008/09 season also began the former NHL player at Metallurg in the newly founded Continental Hockey League , but moved to their league rivals SKA Saint Petersburg after five appearances , where he ended the season. For the 2009/10 season he returned to his ex-club HK MWD, which had since been relocated to Balaschicha. With the HK MWD he was runner-up at the end of the season.

For the 2010/11 season , the HK MWD Balaschicha was merged with the HK Dynamo Moscow and Babenko received a contract with their successor team OHK Dynamo , for which he played in the KHL until 2016.

In 2016, Babenko started his coaching career. He took over the post as assistant coach of Valery Bragin of the Russian U20 national team , with whom he won the bronze medal at the U20 Junior World Championships in 2017 and 2019 . Since 2019 he has been an assistant coach at HK Dynamo Moscow.
