The IIHF European Champions Cup in 2008 the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF was the fourth and final edition of the the successor to the European Hockey League applicable competition . He was between 10 and 13 January 2008 Russia Saint Petersburg held.

The event in 2008 was the last, as the Champions Hockey League succeeded the competition from the 2008/09 season . The winner HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk played against the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League for the Victoria Cup in the summer . All games were played in the Saint Petersburg ice rink , the home ground of SKA Saint Petersburg .

Representatives from the six best European nations according to the IIHF world rankings 2007 were qualified for the IIHF European Champions Cup . The participants were therefore the teams MODO Hockey Örnsköldsvik from Sweden, HC Sparta Prague from the Czech Republic, HC Slovan Bratislava from Slovakia, HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk from Russia, Kärpät Oulu from Finland and HC Davos from Switzerland. It was the third participation for Kärpät and the second for Davos. Teams from Germany and Austria did not qualify due to the poor performance of the national team. The champions and other invited teams from the other European leagues were able to participate in the IIHF Continental Cup .

A total of 29,420 spectators attended the seven tournament games.

Group stage

In the preliminary round three teams played in two groups for the finals.

Hlinka Division

The Hlinka Division - named after the former Czechoslovak player and coach Ivan Hlinka  - saw the Czech representative HC Sparta Prague reach the final with two wins. Already after the first two group games they were the group winners. The final match between HC Davos and Kärpät Oulu was then no longer of any significance.

Ragulin Division

In the Ragulin Division - named after the former Soviet player Alexander Pawlowitsch Ragulin  - the Russian representative HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk prevailed against HC Slovan Bratislava from Slovakia and MODO Hockey Örnsköldsvik from Sweden. After Magnitogorsk and Bratislava had won their opening games against Örnsköldsvik, there was a direct clash in the final group game, in which the aim was to reach the finals. Magnitogorsk finally prevailed thanks to a narrow victory in the penalty shootout and reached the final.

final

In the final there was a clash between the two group winners from Magnitogorsk and Prague, which Magnitogorsk won 5-2 and a Russian team won the title in the fourth year of the event. However, the Russians were only able to secure victory in the final minutes with two hits in the orphaned Prague Gate.

After 1999 and 2000, the Urals club won the Silver Stone Trophy for the third time .
