Sven Helfenstein (born July 30, 1982 in Winterthur ) is a former Swiss ice hockey player who was most recently under contract with Lausanne HC in the National League A.
Career
Sven Helfenstein began his career with the youngsters at EHC Winterthur , before moving to the Elite A-Juniors at EHC Kloten in 1997 . A year later, during the 1998/99 season , he made his debut in the National League A (NLA) for Kloten. But he continued to play for the juniors and won the Swiss junior championship with them in the spring of 1999.
In the following season he was a permanent member of the EHC's NLA squad and was able to score a total of 6 goals and three assists in his rookie year. In the summer of 2000 he was selected in the sixth round in the NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers in 175th place. During the 2000/01 season he moved first from Kloten to HC Thurgau in the NLB, then later to HC La Chaux-de-Fonds , with which he was able to avoid relegation to the NLB in the play-outs. From summer 2001 Helfenstein played for SC Bern and also played a few games for EHC Biel . From 2003 to 2007 he played for the ZSC Lions in the NLA and its farm team , the GCK Lions , in the NLB. In January 2007 it became known that Helfenstein had signed a two-year contract with the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers . He also started the 2007/08 season in Rapperswil, but after Loïc Burkhalter had an argument with the management of HC Davos and moved to Rapperswil early, Sven Helfenstein was handed over to Davos in return. In February 2008 it was announced that Helfenstein had extended his contract beyond the end of the season until the end of the 2009/10 season.
However, since he was often surplus during the following season and so did not get enough assignments, he moved to the SCL Tigers in January 2009 . In January 2011 he was signed by Lausanne HC , where he signed a contract that will apply from the 2011/12 season. He won the National League B championship with the Vaudois in 2013 and then achieved promotion to the National League A with the team.
At the end of August 2013, Helfenstein was deregistered from gaming operations due to recurring back pain.
International
Sven Helfenstein played his first game for Switzerland at the U18 World Cup in 1999 , where the Swiss U18 team finished fourth. With that he justified his commitment at the U20 World Cup in the same year, where he contributed two goals and four assists.
