The 1997/98 season of the European Hockey League was the second edition of the competition of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . It was held between September 16, 1997 and January 25, 1998. A total of 24 teams from twelve nations took part. The leagues from Russia, Finland, the Czech Republic, Germany and Sweden were each represented by three teams in the competition, while Slovakia and Switzerland each provided two participants.

As the surprising winner of the competition, the Final Four of which was held in the Vorarlberghalle in Feldkirch , Austria, VEU Feldkirch emerged from the Austrian Ice Hockey League , which was the first to win an international title and was immortalized in the Silver Stone Trophy . The Austrian team met the winner of the IIHF Continental Cup at the beginning of the following season in order to play off the winner of the IIHF Super Cup .

Attendees

The 24 participants who attended the second event came from twelve different European leagues. The strongest among them had more than just one participant, including the Finnish SM-liiga , Swedish Elitserien , Czech extra- league , Russian super-league and the German ice hockey league with three each and the Slovakian extra- league and Swiss national league A with two.

Since the competition was now the highest international competition at club level after the European Cup was closed, more reigning champions took part this year than last year. During the group stage, the champions of the seven best European leagues played together for the only time in EHL history. A total of ten national champions and seven runners-up played. There were also some wildcards , including one for the defeated finalist from the previous year.

Group stage

In the group stage, which took place from September 16 to December 9, 1999, a total of 24 teams took part in six groups of four teams. These determined the placements in the league system . The group leader in each group and the two group runners-up with the highest points reached the quarter-finals.

Group A

In Group A, the Swedish representative Färjestad BK Karlstad prevailed with a flawless record of six wins from as many games. They finished the preliminary round as the best of all 24 teams. The other three teams in the group did not make it to the next round. With ten points, Jokerit Helsinki was able to collect the most, while the Kassel Huskies won seven and HC Vítkovice only won one point.

Group B

Group B also saw a Scandinavian team reach the quarter-finals. The HPK Hämeenlinna was able to prevail against its competitors with 14 points . They only lost their home game against Leksands IF in the course of the group stage . However, they exploited this gap in the second leg, with which they secured the group victory and ensured that Leksand lacked too many points to reach the quarter-finals. The German champion Adler Mannheim failed with six points as did HC Dukla Trenčín with four points.

Group C

Among the participants in Group C, three came from German-speaking countries. In addition to the Kölner Haien , VEU Feldkirch and SC Bern also played in the group. To the surprise of many, the Austrian champions from Feldkirch were able to win the group. The decisive factor for this was the Austrian victory in the last group game in Cologne, which both had tackled with the same number of twelve points. Due to the defeat, Cologne only took second place and was eliminated like the other German representatives from Mannheim and Kassel. Storhamar IL and SC Bern had nothing to do with the award of the group victory early on.

Group D

In the so-called "death group" D, Torpedo Yaroslavl and HC Slovan Bratislava - as one of the two best runners-up - managed to qualify for the next round. The suffering team was last year's winner TPS Turku , who only managed to win in extra time and another point after losing in the penalty shootout . Luleå HF from Sweden also failed with only five points.

Group E

With HC Petra Vsetín and HK Lada Tolyatti , two teams from Pool E also reached the quarter-finals. Vsetín - like Karlstad and Moscow - remained unbeaten after the regular playing time of 60 minutes and only had to admit defeat to Tolyatti twice in a shootout . Behind the two teams from the Czech Republic and Russia, EV Zug and HC Amiens Somme could not intervene in the battle for group victory. The French were even the only team to remain completely without points in the preliminary round.

Group F.

Last year's finalist HK Dynamo Moscow underpinned its claims to victory in the Silver Stone Trophy in Group F in a superior manner and finished the preliminary round with 16 points as the second best of all teams. Only in the victories against HC Sparta Prague , which disappointed third in the group, and Manchester Storm , which caused a sensation as second in the group with eleven points, the Russians could not take the full number of points. The HC Bolzano closed the preliminary round from a group last.

Final round

For the final round, the first-placed and the two second-placed runners-up of the six preliminary round groups qualified. In the quarter-finals, two teams met each other in the first and second leg. If both teams had won a game and had the same number of goals scored, or both games ended in a draw, the second game was followed by decisive overtime or, if necessary, a penalty shoot- out that started when the score was 0-0. The goal difference played no role. The four winning teams of the comparisons eventually reached the Final Four .

The semifinals and the two placement games were decided in just one duel. In the event of a tie after regular time, there was also an extension and, if necessary, a penalty shootout.

Quarter finals

For the quarter-finals, the games of which were played on January 4 and 6, 1998, four champions, one runner-up and three teams that were placed behind in the national championship qualified after the group stage. Russia was the only country still represented with three teams in the competition.

In the eight quarter-finals, each team, with the exception of Hämeenlinna, won their respective home game. Because of the more goals scored, Moscow, Yaroslavl, Vsetín and Feldkirch reached the Final Four . The closest match was in the match between the two best teams in the preliminary round - Färjestad BK and Dynamo Moscow - which at the end was only one goal apart.

Final Four

The Final Four with the two semi-finals and the following placement games for third place and final victory took place on January 24th and 25th, 1998 in the Vorarlberghalle in Feldkirch, Austria.

Semifinals

In the semifinals, the hosts Feldkirch met Vsetín and Moscow - in a purely Russian duel - against Yaroslavl. The tournament organizer saw the first semi-final in its own hall, with a 3-2 win in the sixth minute of extra time , reaching the final on the following day, thus continuing its unexpected triumph. Vsetín was still in the lead until ten minutes before the end of the game. In the second game, the traditional Russian club of Dynamo Moscow beat Torpedo Yaroslavl just 1-0. As in the previous year, the Muscovites made it to the final of the competition.

final

In front of an officially 5,200 spectators, VEU Feldkirch made one of the biggest sensations in the history of European club ice hockey perfect one day after the final when HK Dynamo Moscow was defeated 5-3 in the final. It was the second defeat in the final for Moscow after losing to TPS Turku the year before.

Feldkirch equalized the game twice in the first two thirds immediately after Moscow took the lead. Shortly before the end of the middle section, the Austrians took the lead for the first time. After another goal, which let VEU pull away to two goals for the first time 13 minutes before the end of the game, Moscow shortened only a little later to the old one-goal gap. The final point to 5: 3 in the orphaned Dynamo goal in the final minute finally sealed the first European Cup win by an Austrian team. Thomas Rundqvist and Simon Wheeldon were able to distinguish themselves with two hits on the Feldkircher side .
