Career
Wheeldon began his career in 1983 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League with the Victoria Cougars . During the 1984 NHL Entry Draft , those in charge of the Edmonton Oilers secured the rights to the offensive player and selected him in the 11th round in a total of 229th position. In the summer of 1986 he moved to the American Hockey League for the New Haven Nighthawks . The Canadian played his first NHL games in the 1987/88 season , when he played five times in eight days for the New York Rangers in March, scoring an assist . It was followed by another six games in the following season in January 1989. During his time with the Rangers Wheeldon was mainly active for various farm teams in the lower North American ice hockey leagues.
For the 1990/91 season he joined the Winnipeg Jets, which, however, also handed him over to the then farm team, the Moncton Hawks . The then 24-year-old only wore the jersey of the Winnipeg Jets four times from the end of October 1990. After another season with the Baltimore Skipjacks in the AHL, he forced a move to Europe in 1992. In the period that followed, the left shooter was able to establish himself as a top scorer and top performer with the Feldkirchen team. In his first season he scored 86 points in 50 games for his new club. Furthermore, he celebrated some national and international successes with the club. He was able to win the Austrian championship five times , the Alpine League championship four times and the European Hockey League once .
At the end of the 1998/99 season Wheeldon left the club and signed a contract with the Munich Barons from the German Ice Hockey League . With the Barons, the former NHL player won the German championship in 2000 and the German runner-up in 2001 . After the club moved to Hamburg in the summer of 2002, he returned to Austria. There he went on the ice again for two seasons for VEU Feldkirch before ending his active ice hockey career in 2004 at the age of 38.
