Nik Zupančič (born October 3, 1968 in Ljubljana ) is a former Slovenian ice hockey player and current coach , who was very successful in Slovenia and Austria from 1984 to 2010.

Career

Nik Zupančič began his career as a hockey player in 1984 with HDD Olimpija Ljubljana in the Yugoslav Ice Hockey League . The striker stayed in Ljubljana until 1987, before moving to league rivals KHL Medveščak Zagreb for one season . The center then went back to its home club and played there for another eight years - until 1991 in the Yugoslav League - and after Slovenia declared independence in the newly founded Slovenian Ice Hockey League . During this period, he and his team won the Slovenian championship title in the 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons .

For the 1996/97 season , HK Sportina Bled signed the striker, where he scored 43 goals and reached 80 points . In the following season he went to the Austrian ice hockey league for VEU Feldkirch . There he celebrated his greatest success to date by winning the European Hockey League and after winning the Austrian championship title in 1998 and two Alpine league victories ( 1998 and 1999 ), Zupančič moved to the Finnish SM-liiga to JYP Jyväskylä . There he was able to convince with 30 scorer points, including twelve goals, in 52 games, whereupon the Timrå IK signed him from the Swedish Elitserien . There he could not build on his performances from the previous year in the 2000/01 season, whereupon he ended the season at his hometown club HDD Olimpija Ljubljana, with which he was again champion. However , he spent the 2001/02 season at his league rivals HK Jesenice .

From 2002 to 2005 Zupančič played for the EHC Lustenau in the Austrian ice hockey league and the second-rate national league , where he also came to a use for the EC Dornbirn in 2002 . In 2005 , the right-handed shooter returned to HDD Olimpija Ljubljana, initially for a year. He then spent a year at EV Zeltweg in the national league before rejoining Ljubljana, which had since been played in the Austrian ice hockey league - for which he continued to play in the Slovenian ice hockey league for two years until 2009. In the 2009/10 season , the long-time national player appeared again for EC Weiz in the third-class league in Austria, before ending his career at the age of 42.

Zupančič has been the assistant coach of the Slovenian national ice hockey team since the 2011 World Cup .

International

For Yugoslavia Zupančič took part in the U20 Junior B World Championship in 1988 and the B World Championship in 1991 . After the division of the country, he was part of the newly established Slovenian national team at the C World Championships in 1993 , 1994 , 1995 , 1996 and 1997 as well as at the B World Championships in 1999 , 2000 , 2001 and 2004 and at the A World Championship in 2002 .
