The 1998-99 season was the seventh and final staging of the Alpenliga in Hockey . A total of 16 teams from Austria , Italy and Slovenia took part. Defending champion was VEU Feldkirch , which was able to secure the championship for the fourth time in a row this season.
Participant field and mode
After the Italian teams had not participated in the previous year and therefore the 1997/98 season had only been played with nine teams, the field of participants was increased to sixteen teams when they returned. The EHC Graz, the successor to EC Graz , which went bankrupt last year, was originally there . However, this was granted only a short lifetime, as he followed the path of his predecessor during the basic round in December.
In the basic round, a simple round-trip round was first played, which resulted in thirty games for each team. The best eight of the 16 teams qualified for an intermediate round, which was played in the form of two tournaments with four participants each in Bozen and Feldkirch. There was a break in which the respective national championships were played. The two group winners then played the final. First of all the victories counted, in case of a tie the goal difference.
Developments after the season
The Alpine League was held for the last time in the 1998/99 season. Although successful, the league struggled with a number of problems throughout its existence. The fans often criticized the fact that some of the participating clubs did not meet the requirements for a league of this format, which was especially true for some of the Italian clubs. In addition, the lack of importance of the league was criticized, as it only served as a preliminary skirmish for the subsequent national championships, in which the national championship titles were usually played on a much smaller scale (in the previous season only the final was played after the national leagues) . When the Italian clubs announced that they would no longer be available for another season, the Alpine League was finally dissolved.
Austria and Slovenia, however, stuck to the concept of a transnational league and founded the Interliga for the 1999/2000 season together with some Hungarian clubs , in which Austria only participated for one season, as the league system in Austria was subsequently reformed (see Austrian Ice Hockey League 2000/01 ). The Interliga was able to keep a relatively large position in Eastern European ice hockey for a few years before it was dissolved in 2007.
