The 1995/96 season was the fourth regular staging of the transnational ice hockey competition of the Alpine League . It was held with a total of seventeen professional teams from Austria , Italy and Slovenia . The defending champion was HC Bozen , which lost its championship to VEU Feldkirch , which established a long-term dominance in the Alpine League and Austrian ice hockey.
Participant field and mode
After no Slovenian team took part in the Alpine League last season , HK Jesenice , HDD Olimpija Ljubljana and HK Bled have now returned to the championship. Otherwise the field of participants remained practically unchanged.
This time the seventeen teams were divided into three groups of two times six and one time five teams and played a simple round trip against each other (eight and ten games, respectively). The best teams of the groups East and Middle were automatically qualified for the playoffs, the other teams, which finished first and second in their respective groups, finally played a qualifying game each to determine the two remaining semi-finals. The semi-finals and finals were ultimately played as a simple game.
Basic round
Group West was dominated by VEU Feldkirch, who defeated HC Devils Milano , who would later be bottom of the group, 28-0 in a memorable game . This result was the main reason for the outstanding goal difference of VEU, which finally secured her first place in front of the only Italian playoff participant, HC Varèse . The Devils, on the other hand, had to struggle with financial problems the whole season and completed the season with a hardly reinforced youth team.
The middle group won the EC KAC mainly thanks to a trio of strikers consisting of Dieter Kalt , Rob Doyle and Dmitri Gogolew . Here the HC Bozen had big problems, which had won the European league cup held last year instead of the Alpine League and only made it to fourth place this year.
The group east was the closest of all and could finally be won by HK Jesenice . Here, too, the Italian teams played only a subordinate role and showed that the smaller Italian teams in particular could only compete with the big names in Austrian and Slovenian ice hockey to a limited extent.
