The Turkish Foundation for Economic and Social Studies , abbreviated TESEV for " Türkiye Ekonomik ve Sosyal Etüdler Vakfı ", is one of the most respected independent think tanks in Turkey and sees itself as a bridge between research and politics. Her economic and social science studies on the situation in Turkey, where there are many opinions but relatively few empirical studies on the major social issues, have already made many important contributions.
The organization is based in Istanbul and was founded in 1994 as a foundation. TESEV sees itself as the successor to the "Ekonomik ve Sosyal Etüdler Konferans Heyeti" which was founded in 1961 by the pharmaceutical industrialist Nejat Eczacıbaşı and whose successor Bülent Eczacıbaşı was the founding chairman of TESEV from 1993 to 1997. Can Paker was TESEV chairman from 1997 to 2015. In 2015 a new board of trustees was elected and the staff structure at TESEV was changed.
Main study topics are democratization , good governance and foreign policy . TESEV organizes joint conferences and workshops with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation , Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Heinrich Böll Foundation . TESEV has an annual budget of approximately US $ 2 million in 2008, of which $ 400,000 is contributed by the Soros Foundation , with the remainder coming from Turkish sources. TESEV has also received numerous grants from the World Bank , United Nations Development Programs, and other organizations.
