Nejat Eczacıbaşı

Nejat Ferit Eczacıbaşı (born January 5, 1913 in İzmir , † October 6, 1993 in Philadelphia ) was a Turkish pharmaceutical entrepreneur and promoted the arts.

Life

Nejat Eczacıbaşı was born in 1913 in İzmir, Turkey, the eldest of seven sons of a pharmacist. His father, Suleyman Ferit, was the first Turkish pharmacist in İzmir and a senior pharmacist in a hospital. When family names were introduced in Turkey in 1934, the family chose the name “Eczacıbaşı”, which means “Senior Pharmacist” in Turkish.

After completing his school days at Robert College in Istanbul , Nejat studied chemistry in Germany at the University of Heidelberg . From 1934 to 1935 he attended the University of Chicago in the United States and completed his studies with a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in chemistry. In 1935 he returned to Germany and completed his chemistry studies in 1938 as Dr. rer. nat. at the Humboldt University in Berlin . Before returning to Turkey, he spent another year researching biochemical topics at the Kaiser Wilhelm Society in Germany.

In 1941, Nejat Eczacıbaşı went into business for himself with a pharmaceutical company producing vitamin supplements . A production facility for pharmaceuticals was opened in Istanbul as early as 1952. In 1958 he also started manufacturing hygiene products and in 1970 the manufacture of toilet paper was added. The production of blood plasma and pharmaceutical raw materials began in 1982. There were also companies for the production of wall and floor tiles, construction and welding materials and various chemicals. The holding was founded on December 29, 1973.

Nejat Eczacıbaşı was a co-founder of the Istanbul Art and Culture Foundation in 1973, which has since organized various cultural events during the Istanbul Festival every year . The Dr. He established the Nejat Eczacıbaşı Foundation in 1978.

In 1946 he married his wife Beyhan, née Ergene. They had two sons, Bülent (1949) and Faruk (1953).

On March 31, 1993, he handed over management to his brother Şakir , who in turn later transferred it to Bülent Eczacıbaşı . Nejat Eczacıbaşı was the honorary chairman of the group of companies. He died of a stroke on October 6, 1993 in an American hospital where he was about to undergo cataract eye surgery.

Nejat Eczacıbaşı was a founding member of the third Rotary club founded in Turkey in 1961 in İzmir .
