The Dornbirn ice hockey club “the Bulldogs” is an Austrian ice hockey club from Dornbirn ( Vorarlberg ) that has been playing in the Erste Bank ice hockey league since 2012 . Before that, Vorarlberg had been active in the national league from 2001 and celebrated two championship titles there.
history
Beginnings
The EC Dornbirn was founded in 1992 as the successor to the EHC Dornbirn and initially established itself primarily as a training club whose various youth teams were able to quickly celebrate successes. In 1998 the super mini boys, in 2001 the mini boys and in 2002 the students won the championship title in their respective age group. In addition, the club management tried through cooperation projects with various established teams to catch up with the level of professionals. These efforts bore fruit in 2001, when the club was able to qualify for the first time for the National League , Austria's second-highest division.
National league
The first major success in the club's history was the runner-up title in 2004, where they won the regular season, but then lost 3-0 to Red Bulls Salzburg in the final . In the 2007/08 season the people from Dornbirn were again in the final and won the first national league title in the club's history against the Salzburg farm team . After a runner-up title in the 2008/09 season , in which they lost 3-1 to EHC Lustenau in the series , the Bulldogs were able to win the title in the National League again in the following 2009/10 season .
As the runner-up in the regular round, the Dornbirn team were already in the semi-finals and were able to defeat the Salzburg Red Bulls' farm team 3-0. In the final, the opponent was HC Innsbruck , who had been relegated from the Bundesliga before the season . Before the playoffs had the team with former KAC - Goalkeeper Hannes Enzenhofer and the Vienna Capitals retired defender Tino Anton Teppert strengthened. The series against Innsbruck could finally be won 3-1. As in the two previous seasons, the Dornbirner had to move to the Rheinhalle , the venue of the EHC Lustenau , in the final .
Bundesliga
In spring 2012, after a long planning phase, EC Dornbirn applied for admission to the top Austrian league. The application was accepted, which means that a team from Vorarlberg has been active in the Bundesliga for the first time since VEU Feldkirch left in 2004.
In the first Bundesliga season 2012/13 , the Dornbirn team reached the penultimate place in the main round and were eliminated after the qualifying round without a play-off ticket. Surprisingly, two Dornbirn legionnaires established themselves as the best players in the league. Luciano Aquino scored the most points and the most assists in the league, while Andrew Kozek scored the most goals.
There were a number of signings in 2013/14 , in return Andrew Kozek left the team and moved to Linz. In their only second EBEL season, the Dornbirns managed to get into the play-off, with Luciano Aquino once again distinguished himself as one of the best players in the league. In the quarter-finals, Vorarlberg lost 4-2 in the series against Salzburg.
The 2014/15 season was not successful for Dornbirn. After Aquino had moved to the top Swedish league, the club finished the main round in tenth place and could not solve a play-off ticket in the qualifying round.
In the 2015/16 season , the Dornbirner were able to qualify directly for the play-off with sixth place in the main round, but only achieved the last place in the placement round of the top six. In the quarter-finals of the play-offs, the Dornbirn team met Orli Znojmo , to whom they lost 2: 4 in the best-of-seven mode.
In 2016/17 Dornbirn landed in tenth place in the main round and had to go to the qualifying round. There the Bulldogs barely missed a playoff ticket with six wins from ten games when they landed only four points behind Orli Znojmo in third place.
Name Sponsors
In the course of its history, EC Dornbirn had several sponsors, whose names it bore in the team name. For a long time the full name of the team was EC TRENDamin Bulldogs Dornbirn . This was shortened to EC-TREND Dornbirn in the 2005 season , which remained the official name until 2008. The full name of the team has been EC hagn_leone Dornbirn since the 2009/10 season . The team always kept their nickname Bulldogs .

The following table shows the placements of the club through all seasons.
Until the 2008/09 season, the 2-point rule (2 points for a win in regular time or overtime / shootout) was in effect in the national league, with the start of the 2009/10 season the 3-point rule was introduced, meaning a win was rated with 3 points in regular playing time. Furthermore, between 2002 and 2010, the points were halved after half of the basic round. The column »Pt. tot. «shows the actual points achieved based on the number of wins and losses.

Venue
Since the mid-2000s there has been a lively discussion about the Dornbirn exhibition stadium, the home ground of the Dornbirn ice hockey club. This stadium was designed by the city of Dornbirn as a multi-purpose hall, so not only ice hockey is played in the hall. So it was the case on September 24th and 25th, 2006, that David Copperfield put on his magic show in the exhibition hall. As a result, the arena could not be used by the Dornbirn ice hockey players and ice training could only begin on October 5th.
This fact affects not only the professional team, but also the junior teams, because it means they have to switch to other halls in Vorarlberg, which causes additional costs. In the 2004 playoffs, EC Dornbirn had to switch to the Lustenau ice rink due to the Dornbirn spring fair. In the 2007/08 and 2009/10 seasons the Rheinhalle had to serve as its home stadium, in the 2008/09 season the club played in the Vorarlberghalle in Feldkirch.
