The 2011/12 season of the Austrian National Ice Hockey League began on September 17, 2011. The defending champion was VEU Feldkirch . In the playoff final, HC Innsbruck prevailed against ATSE Graz and won the championship title of the second highest Austrian league for the first time.

Participant field and mode

After the field of participants had consisted of eight teams in the previous season, it was increased to twelve teams for the previous season. A few new farm teams from various Bundesliga clubs were added, as well as a foreign club for the first time: Dab.docler from Dunaújváros . The only exit was the EC Red Bull Salzburg farm team . Due to the new regulation, which required the Bundesliga clubs to participate in the U20 Bundesliga, and since participation in the Czech youth league was planned at the same time, the Salzburg team decided not to be named.

This was accompanied by a division of the teams into two groups.

mode

A basic round is played with a simple round-trip round against all teams (22 games), as well as an additional round-trip round against the teams from their own group (10 games). All 32 encounters are rated in a common table. This is followed by playoffs for which the eight best clubs qualify. These will be held in the form of quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals as best-of-five series.

Transfer card regulation

In general, a limit of three transfer card players per team was set. The penultimate of the last season can use four players, the new teams can use five players. A total of three exchanges per team are allowed until the transfer deadline (January 31, 2012).

Basic round

The basic round was characterized by a strong performance gap between the established teams and the farm teams of the Bundesliga clubs. There was a high number of double-digit victories over the course of the season. The farm team of the EHC Linz could only win three of its 32 games and received more than four times as many goals as they could score their own goals. The EC KAC fared only slightly better. Only the Silver Capitals showed that they could match the level of the league.

A far more pleasant surprise was the performance of Hungarian newcomer Dab.Docler , who was able to confidently qualify for the playoffs. With only four defeats, ATSE Graz dominated the league and won the regular season by almost ten points.

Criticism of the mode was already loud during the course of the season, as the farm teams also caused a strong west-east divide and thus reduced the value of the league. In addition, just before the end of the main round, a mistake in the implementation regulations was discovered that prevented foreign clubs from participating in the playoffs. In this regard, however, the competition officer of the Austrian ice hockey association made it clear that Dab.Docler is in any case eligible to play in the playoffs despite the objection.
