The 2010/11 season of the Austrian national ice hockey league began on September 18, 2010. The defending champion is EC hagn_leone Dornbirn .

Participating teams

(ranked by previous year placement, as of May 7, 2010)

Compared to the previous season, the field of participants has increased: ATSE Graz , which had previously won the league championship title for the second time in a row since its re-establishment , is making use of its right to promotion and is the eighth team to take part in the league. In February 2010, HC Innsbruck reaffirmed that they wanted to compete in the second division for at least another season in order to be able to consolidate financially.

After the disappointing performance in the previous year, the EHC Lustenau made a course correction: coach Robert Steinwender was dismissed and replaced by Kari Eloranta. With this change at the top and the signing of a few new players, the club should be able to build on its old successes again. Among other things, Bernhard Bock , the goalkeeper of last year's champions EC Dornbirn , was signed. Further transfers are to follow.

Mode and regulations

The new mode was released in July 2010. The eight teams will play two rounds against each other in the basic round starting on September 18, 2010, which results in a total of 28 games per team. Then the field of participants is divided up: the top and bottom four teams each play a round-trip round (six matches), whereby the points from the basic round are deleted and replaced by bonus points (in each group from 4 to one point).

The winner of the upper group is then set for the semi-finals, the eighth placed is eliminated. The remaining six teams determine the three other semi-final participants in the quarter-finals. All playoff series are in the mode Best of five held. The new master will be determined on March 26th at the earliest and April 2nd, 2011 at the latest.

Transfer card regulation

As in previous years, three transfer card players may be used per team in the 2010/11 season. There are two exceptions to this, however: EHC Bregenzerwald is allowed to use a fourth transfer card player as the last place in the preseason, but who must be under 22 years of age. With regard to its training program, the EC Red Bull Salzburg may use a total of eight transfer card players, but will otherwise only compete with Austrians who are also younger than 22 years.

Basic round

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was dominated by HC Innsbruck, which was able to start a long streak of victories in the Bundesliga at about the same time as the EC KAC . While the EC KAC set a new record for the Bundesliga with seventeen wins in a row, the Innsbruckers achieved the Austrian-internal record: after the team had lost the opening game against Lustenau on their own ice with 1: 8, the second defeat of the preliminary round was then up on December 30, 2010 when the ATSE Graz inflicted a defeat on the Tyroleans for the first time after a total of 21 victories. Vice-champion Dornbirn established himself as the first pursuer by some distance, but was also able to play out a large gap to third place, which underlined how much the two clubs dominated the regular season.

Ranks three and four were taken by VEU Feldkirch and the EC Red Bull Salzburg farm team. Newcomers ATSE Graz had to struggle with some problems in the first season, but with the exception of a nine-game series of defeats they were able to convince shortly after the start of the season. The roster was expanded a number of times during the season. The most prominent newcomer was Todd Elik , who only played fourteen games for Graz. At EHC Lustenau, the desired new addition was only partially successful, as the club could not find a constant performance and had to lose games again and again, especially against the table neighbors. The Zeller Eisbären and the EHC Bregenzerwald landed at the end of the table. However, while the Zeller performed better towards the end of the regular season and were able to make up some ground, the forests did not manage to continue the promising start of the season and could only win one game in the second half of the regular season.

The season set new standards for the second division, especially in terms of player commitments: the Innsbruck team had already been able to sign NHL veteran Rem Murray , who had already played for the team in the Bundesliga two years earlier, before the start of the season . A few other clubs also secured the services of experienced players with extensive Bundesliga experience: Aaron Fox came from KHL Medveščak Zagreb and Mickey Elick from EC VSV to Dornbirn, and Todd Elik moved to ATSE Graz.

Placement round

While the placement round in the lower group brought no more changes, so that the EHC Bregenzerwald had to end the season early, as expected, the three best-placed teams still changed places. EC Dornbirn overtook HC Innsbruck and qualified ahead of time for the semi-finals, while Innsbruck went through a small low after the end of the winning streak and could only win two of the six matches. With that, the team slipped into third place behind VEU Feldkirch, which scored points in every game and in the end just had to admit defeat to EC Dornbirn. Salzburg could only win one game and suffered several major defeats at the same time - a 2: 9 in Dornbirn and a 3: 7 in Feldkirch.
