The 1996/97 season of the Austrian national ice hockey league was played with fourteen teams. The defending champion was EC Kitzbühel from the major league season held last year , which had served as the second division instead of the national league. The new champion was the EHC Lustenau , which, however, did not make use of its right to promotion to the Bundesliga .
Participant and mode
The pre-season field of ten teams has been expanded to fourteen teams for the current season. The UEC Mödling and SC Kufstein were to be reported as departures . New additions were EHC Lustenau , who had voluntarily relegated from the Bundesliga for financial reasons and for the same reasons renounced promotion after winning the championship, as well as SC Hohenems , EK Zell am See , EV Zeltweg (was the last to leave the Bundesliga relegated), the UEHV Gmunden and the Union EC Eisenstadt . The latter brought one of the rare appearances of a Burgenland team in one of the professional ice hockey leagues in Austria.
The clubs initially played a simple round-trip round in two groups of seven teams each. The three best-placed teams then determined the order for the quarter-finals in a qualifying round. The playoffs were then played consistently in best-of-three mode.
