The 1989/90 season of the Austrian national ice hockey league was played with five teams. Master was EK Zell am See .

Participant field and mode

Since the two finalists from the previous year, the KSV ice hockey club and the ATSE Graz , were promoted to the Austrian ice hockey league , the field of participants was filled with the ATSV Steyr and the UEC Graz , so that five teams competed for the championship title.

Initially, a double round-trip round was played, after which bonus points were awarded to the teams based on the placement. In a further round-trip round, the playoff participants were then determined. The playoffs, consisting of semi-finals and finals, were played in best-of-three mode.
