The 1988/89 season of the Austrian national ice hockey league was played with six teams. Master was Kapfenberger SV .

Participant field and mode

With the UEC Mödling , a club from the Vienna area got out of the league after the preseason. This was replaced by the EC Kitzbühel from Tyrol. Initially, a double round trip was played. Following the placement, bonus points were then distributed and another simple round-trip was played. The two best clubs qualified for the final, which in the mode best-of-three was held.

With the victory in the final, SV Kapfenberg successfully defended its title from the previous year. Both finalists rose to the Bundesliga in the following season.
