The association was founded and renamed several times in the course of its history due to financial problems. The last re-establishment took place in 2015 as KSV Eishockey .

Previously, the club was known from 1994 under the name EC Pewag Tigers , which went back to the former main sponsor Pewag . After his final exit in 2002, the club had to rename itself and chose the name KSV IceStars . Even before that, the club was partly known as the KSV ice hockey club , but ran the former main sponsor in its name until the early 2000s. After the takeover by Raimund Schmied and the return of Pewag as sponsor, the club called itself again IceTigers.

In June 2009, the IceTigers filed for bankruptcy - the third bankruptcy in Kapfenberg ice hockey in 30 years. The aim was to continue the game operation as a division of the Kapfenberg Bulls in the league. This step was successful.

From the 2012/13 season the Bulls played in the newly established National Amateur Hockey League , the third highest Austrian league. There they became runner-up in their first year. The Bulls also spent the 2013/14 season in the NAHL and were runner-up again. The EC Kitzbühel prevailed in the Best-of-Five series .

Before the 2014/15 season, the ice hockey club was transformed again and the era of the Bulls ended. The new club was called HC Steelers Kapfenberg and rose under the leadership of sports director Jiří Hála as a branch of Kapfenberger SV in the Inter-National League . The aim of this restructuring was the professionalization of Kapfenberg ice hockey, including new employees in management and some professional players. The first competitive game of the HC Steelers took place on September 20, 2014 in front of around 2,000 spectators in the Kapfenberg ice rink, with the Steelers losing 0: 2 to EK Zell am See . After the Steelers was excluded from the Kapfenberg sports association at the end of May 2015, the club , which had only been founded 14 months earlier, was dissolved again with immediate effect. At the time of the exclusion, the club's reported debt level is said to be around 120,000 euros and the players have had outstanding salaries for months. In early March 2015, head coach Štefan Mikeš spoke in an interview with the Kleine Zeitung about the club's mainly financial problems; Before that, some players and the assistant coach had migrated due to these circumstances. Head coach Mikeš announced his move to HC AZ Havířov in 2010 a month earlier .

A new ice hockey club was founded in Kapfenberg even before insolvency proceedings were opened on July 9, 2015 against the assets of the STEELERS Kapfenberg Hockey Club , with assets of € 2,000 being offset by liabilities of € 139,000. The founding of the KSV ice hockey club was announced in mid-June 2015 , with the Kapfenberg sports association once again acting as the umbrella club. Although there were still financial problems, the club's participation in the Inter-National League was confirmed on July 15, 2015. After only one year in Austria's second-highest division, they retired to the Styrian elite league for the 2016/17 season so as not to suffocate again in financial problems.

In 2018 the KSV joined the newly founded Austrian Amateur Hockey League (ÖAHL). In the first (and for the time being also last) season , Kapfenberg dominated the league and became champions with 19 wins from a total of 20 games. After the end of the ÖAHL, the KSV announced their return to the Styrian elite league .
