history

1974 to 1981: the founding years

The SC Hohenems was founded in 1974 by ice hockey enthusiasts from Hohenems. A natural ice rink at "Rosenplatz" served as the initial venue. In the first few years, the game was played exclusively on natural ice. During this time, SC Hohenems played in the Vorarlbergliga and later in the Oberliga. In which SC Hohenems won the championship title in the West Region in the 1976/77 season .

1981: New ice rink

After seven years of “natural ice hockey”, a new sports facility was created for SC Hohenems. In 1981, an open-air artificial ice rink was built in Hohenems, which was very modern for the conditions at the time. The stadium had 2 guest cabins and a cabin wing consisting of a referee's cabin and a cabin for the SC Hohenems fighting team. The stadium has essentially remained unchanged to this day.

1983 to 1990: Start of the official youth work

The official year in which the youth work started in Hohenems is currently unclear due to a lack of records. However, with the participation in the Austrian School Championship and the Regional League West in 1983, this date can be assumed to be certain. The SC Hohenems fighting team became regional champions in the 1982/83 season.

In the 1989/90 season, the SC Hohenems youngsters took part in the Austrian Bundesliga for youngsters. In the same season, the fighting team won the runner-up in the regional league.

1991 to 1996: Swiss League and Bavarian National League

SC Hohenems played in various ice hockey leagues between 1991 and 1996, including in Switzerland and Germany.

season league placement
1991/92 Regional league Runner-up
1992/93 Bavarian State League Gr. 4th master
1992/93 Vorarlberg State League master
1993/94 Eastern Swiss national class 4 master
1994/95 Eastern Swiss national class 3 master
1995/96 Eastern Swiss national class 3 master

1996 to 2000: ups and downs

One of the highlights of the club's history was the promotion to the national ice hockey league in the 1996/1997 season . A 4th place in the basic round of Group West and by two points missed the SC Hohenems entry into the playoffs. In the following years SC Hohenems played again in the regional league. The only highlight was the 1999/2000 runner-up in the regional league.

The renovation of the ice hockey halls in Dornbirn, Feldkirch and Lustenau resulted in a high density of larger ice hockey clubs with good infrastructure in Vorarlberg. Training security in all weathers and successes in the national league and Bundesliga made these three big clubs attractive promoters of young talent. In a direct comparison, the ice rink in Hohenems, in need of renovation, was able to attract fewer young players, which is why the youngsters have thinned out over the years. In the end, the junior teams with the same age groups of the top clubs from Dornbirn and Lustenau were merged and given up. This represented the sporting low point of the club.

2000 to 2011: Vorarlbergliga championship title and cup winner

The SC Hohenems fighting team remained active. With the descent from the Oberliga , SC Hohenems played in the highest Vorarlberg ice hockey league. During this time, the championship title was won four times and the ice hockey cup was won in 2010 and 2011.

2012 to 2016

offspring

A new club concept was presented in the 2009/10 season. For the first time, this also provided for an engagement in the youth sector. The goal of a functioning young business was pursued in the years to come, but it got off to a slow start; the competition from the established top clubs Dornbirner EC , EHC Lustenau and VEU Feldkirch was too great . With the 5-year “Strategy 2020” plan introduced in 2015 - the goal is to increase the number of youngsters to 100 children, spread across all age groups up to U14 - the number of youngsters was increased to 50 after just two years (as of 2016).

Elite League Tyrol

Due to the new potential of home-made players and new reinforcement players, some of them returning, the club reformed in 2012. The SC Hohenems fighting team switched again to the 3rd Austrian ice hockey league - Eliteliga Tirol - and has played there until now. In 2016, ex-Bundesliga player Heimo Lindner was hired as head coach of SC Hohenems. The team narrowly missed the playoff. Three teams - including SC Hohenems - were equal on points at the end of the regular round. The decision was based on the comparison of the direct duels, so the SC Hohenems finished the season in 5th place.

Vorarlberg League

In addition to the fighting team, a farm team named "SC Hohenems 2" was placed in the Vorarlbergliga. With the championship title in 2013, these rose to the top division of the Vorarlberg League.

2017/18: double champion

Elite League Tyrol

The 2017/18 season is one of the most successful seasons in the club's history. With the championship title of the fighting team in the elite league around head coach Heimo Lindner, a long-term goal - to gain a lasting foothold in the national ice hockey league - was finally achieved. SC Hohenems won the "Best-of-Five" series against the Kufstein Dragons 3-0.

Vorarlberg League

The team of the Vorarlberg League was greatly expanded before the season. By changing players from SC Samina Rankweil, the squad could be significantly upgraded. Furthermore, the coaching position could be filled with an ice hockey veteran and VEU legend Bernd Schmiedle. The SC Hohenems farm team defeated the EHC Aktivpark Montafon in the "best-of-three" series 1: 2 and became the Vorarlberg ice hockey champion.

Ice stadium renovation

The renovation work on the Hohenems Herrenried ice rink began at the beginning of April 2018 and is expected to be completed in November 2018. The renovation will be carried out in two construction phases and will have a budget of 2.4 million euros. In the first construction phase, the new cabin wings of the SC Hohenems will be built, as well as the new boards, sound and lighting will be installed. In the second construction phase of 2019, the grandstand will be completely renovated and covered. The city of Hohenems bears the costs for the renovation.
