The champions of the Austrian ice hockey league in 1979/80 were the EC KAC for the twentieth time , successfully defending the title.
Bundesliga
mode
The eight clubs played against each other four times in the regular season. The four best clubs qualified for the four-round championship round, the remaining four played in the relegation group in two rounds to stay in the Bundesliga. The teams took 4, 3, 2 or 1 bonus points depending on their placement in the basic round.
