William "Bill" Gilligan (born August 5, 1954 in Beverly , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach . From 2009 to 2011 he was the head coach of the Austrian national team .
Career
Bill Gilligan completed 301 games as a right wing player in US professional and university leagues as well as in the Austrian first division. He was on the ice for the Cincinnati Stingers in the World Hockey Association and the Hampton Gulls in the American Hockey League . He scored 217 goals and posted 271 assists.
Coaching career
At the age of 31, Bill Gilligan took over his first coaching position in Austria in 1984 with the Austrian record champions KAC and won the Austrian title four times (1985-1988). Before that he was player-coach at Wiener EV in the 1981/82 season and at WAT Stadlau in the 1982/83 season. He then moved to SC Bern in Switzerland , where he was three times champion and one runner-up in four years. Then Bill Gilligan coached the U20 national team of Switzerland and then the senior national team.
Then Bill Gilligan returned to the United States, where he worked as a trainer at the University of Massachusetts . In the meantime, he also appeared as a scout for the NHL franchise Los Angeles Kings from 2003 to 2005 . But he came back to Europe in 2005 and coached the Swiss National League A club Rapperswil-Jona Lakers until 2007 .
From the 2008/09 season Gilligan was under contract with the EC Graz 99ers , who made it back into the playoffs for the first time in four years under his leadership and were able to win the first playoff game in the club's history. In the 2009/10 season , the team decided the basic round of the Austrian league in first place for the first time. His activity ended after the 2010/11 game year.
At the same time, Bill Gilligan coached the Austrian national team from August 2009 to 2011 .
Since the 2014/15 season, he has been an associate coach of the men's ice hockey team at Merrimack College in North Andover , Massachusetts.
