The IIHF Continental Cup 2016/17 was the 20th anniversary of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . The tournament began on September 30, 2016, the super-final took place from January 13-15, 2017. A total of 19 teams from as many European countries took part in the six tournaments.

- The winner of the Continental Cup was given the right to start the Champions Hockey League (CHL) for the following season
- No participant was automatically qualified for the final tournament; H. all teams had to qualify for the super finals through qualifying tournaments of the various rounds
- Teams from the countries of the founding leagues of the CHL are not allowed to participate in the Continental Cup (Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Germany, Austria)

First round
The first round games took place in Sofia ( Bulgaria ) from September 30th to October 2nd, 2016 . Participants were HK Partizan Belgrade ( Serbia ), HC Bat Yam ( Israel ), SK Irbis-Skate (Bulgaria) and Zeytinburnu Belediyesi SK ( Turkey ).
The winner of the first round qualified for the second round. There he met the seven teams already seeded for the second round.

Second round
The second round of the Continental Cup was played in two groups from October 21 to 23, 2016. The venues were Jaca in Spain (with hosts CH Jaca , HK Liepāja ( Latvia ), Nottingham Panthers ( United Kingdom ) and the qualifier from the first round Zeytinburnu Belediyesi SK from Turkey ), and Tychy in Poland (with hosts GKS Tychy , CSM Dunărea Galați ( Romania ), the HDD Acroni Jesenice ( Slovenia ) and DVTK Jegesmedvék (Hungary)).
The first placed of the two groups reached the third round and met the teams seeded for the third round.

Third round
The third round of the Continental Cup was played in two groups from November 18 to 20, 2016. The venues were Odense in Denmark (with hosts Odense Bulldogs , Ducs d'Angers ( France ), HK Donbass Donetsk ( Ukraine ) and the qualifier of Group B Nottingham Panthers from United Kingdom ) and Ritten in Italy (with host Ritten Sport , HK Schachzjor Salihorsk ( Belarus ), HK Beibarys Atyrau ( Kazakhstan ) and the qualifier from Group C GKS Tychy from Poland ).
The first two of the two groups reached the final round.

The awards in the final tournament went to goalkeeper Miika Wiikman from the tournament winner Nottingham Panthers , Kazakh defender Dmitri Stepanow in the service of HK Beibarys Atyrau and his teammate, striker Albert Vishnyakov .
Brad Moran from the Nottingham Panthers and Albert Wischnjakow from HK Beibarys Atyrau secured the crown of the top scorer with four points each. With two goals each, next to Moran and Vishnyakov, Robert Farmer , Chris Lawrence (both Nottingham), Dmitri Stepanow (Atyrau) and Sebastian Strandberg (Odense) were the best goalscorers. Most assists came from Jason Williams of the Nottingham Panthers and Tony Romano of the Odense Bulldogs , who each scored three goals. The best catch rate among goalkeepers was shown by Miika Wiikman, who parried 96.97 percent of the shots on his goal.
