The Ritten ( Italian Renon ) is a mountain ridge in the southeast of the Sarntal Alps in South Tyrol . It is bounded in the west by the Sarntal , in the east by the Eisack valley and in the south by the Bozen valley basin. In the north it is dominated by the Rittner Horn ( 2260  m ). The settlements at about 900 to 1300  m high on the ridge belong to the municipality of Renon of the same name .

geography

Together with the Tschögglberg and the Regglberg, the Renon belongs to the middle mountain ranges in the area around Bolzano, which are mostly made up of the Etschtal volcanic group ( Bozen quartz porphyry ) . Today's relief of the Renon was largely shaped by glacial activity during the Ice Age, which left behind numerous glacial troughs and erratic blocks . The ridge is known for its earth pyramids (for example on the Rivelaunbach ), slender earth pillars with a capstone created by erosion .

Due to its geological conditions, the Renon is relatively arid. Nevertheless there are a number of ponds (including the Wolfsgrubner See ) and moors. The Renon is characterized by diverse vegetation. In the lower areas of the southern slope above Bolzano, sub-Mediterranean mixed deciduous forests dominate , which are characterized by heat- loving hop beeches and downy oaks . Pine forests adjoin at altitudes between 800 and 1000  m , followed by spruce and stone pine forests . The highest areas of the ridge near the tree line are overgrown with dwarf shrub communities .

Settlements

The largest villages on the approximately 900 to 1300  m high plateau-like area of the Renon are Klobenstein , Lengstein , Oberbozen , Oberinn , Unterinn and Wangen , which all belong to the municipality of Renon . There are also numerous smaller hamlets and farmsteads scattered across the ridge. Significantly lower, on the steep slopes just above the Bolzano basin, lie the villages of St. Magdalena , St. Justina and Leitach , which are already part of the municipality .
