Jason Williams (born August 11, 1980 in London , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who played 482 games for the Detroit Red Wings , Chicago Blackhawks , Atlanta Thrashers and Columbus between 1996 and 2017 Blue Jackets , Dallas Stars and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger . Williams celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Detroit Red Wings by winning the Stanley Cup in 2002 .
Career
Jason Williams began his career in 1996 in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes . In the first two years he didn't really stand out. It was not until the 1998/99 season that he was able to draw attention to himself and scored a total of 74 points. The following season he was only one point worse and won the plus / minus rating, but was not drafted , which is why the Detroit Red Wings signed him as a free agent in September 2000 .
Until 2003 he played mainly with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and the Grand Rapids Griffins in the lower-class American Hockey League and was only used for the Red Wings if a player was injured. After all, he played 25 regular season games and 9 games in the playoffs of the 2001/02 season when the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup .
In the 2003/04 season he was used more often, but was slowed down by some injuries. During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season and the associated cancellation of the NHL season, Williams played in the Finnish SM-liiga for Porin Ässät . After the lockout, he played almost the entire 2005/06 season for the Red Wings and was only two games missing due to a minor injury and achieved a personal best with 58 points.
In the summer he signed a new two-year contract with Red Wings. In November 2006, Jason Williams was checked by Raffi Torres of the Edmonton Oilers and crashed his head on the ice. Williams had to be transported from the ice rink on a stretcher and was absent from three games due to a facial injury and a severe concussion. After that he was able to play regularly again, but was not able to build on the good performance of the previous season. On February 26, 2007 he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks for Kyle Calder .
In the 2007/08 season he was able to match his good performances with 36 scorer points in 43 games, but missed almost half of the season due to injury in the Chicago squad. In the summer of 2008 he did not get a new contract from the Blackhawks and moved to the Atlanta Thrashers . After only half a year they sent him to the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of a transfer deal . The 2009/10 season spent Williams with the Detroit Red Wings, for which he completed 47 games and scored 15 points. After his contract expired, he was initially without a club, before Williams was invited to a try-out at the Connecticut Whale in the AHL in December 2010 . In February 2011, the Dallas Stars provided him with a contract until the end of the season. After his contract with the stars expired, the striker was signed on July 26, 2011 by the Pittsburgh Penguins on a two-way contract.
Since Williams saw little prospect of more playing times in the NHL for the coming season, he moved to Europe and signed a 2-year contract with HC Ambrì-Piotta , a club from the highest Swiss ice hockey league . In the 2012/13 season he was able to score a total of 48 points (26 goals, 22 assists) in 50 games (season and play-outs) for his club, making him the best goalscorer this season in the league . In the following season Williams - also due to an injury - could no longer build on these successes (8 goals, 10 assists in 32 games) and his contract in Ambri was no longer extended.
Although he had offers from other clubs in the Swiss league, he moved back to North America for the 2014/15 season and signed a contract with the Oklahoma City Barons , the Edmonton Oilers' then AHL farm team . Even if the hoped-for renewed NHL appearance was no longer possible, he was able to play a solid season with 53 points (21 goals, 23 assists) and was signed by the Kölner Haien from the German ice hockey league for the 2015/16 season .
But Williams injured his back in a test match against SC Langnau Tigers in the pre-season phase and was only able to play the first game of the season for his new club in November 2015. In the further course of the season he had health problems and only made 9 appearances (3 assists), so that his contract was not extended by the Haien at the end of the season.
At the end of October 2016, he received a short-term contract from the South Tyrolean Ritten Sport club . Williams was instrumental in Ritten's entry into the final tournament of the IIHF Continental Cup by scoring three goals and three assists in three missions. In addition, he scored three goals in two games in the Alps Hockey League and booked an assist.
In early December 2016 he was signed by the Nottingham Panthers from the British EIHL . Despite a new offer, he did not extend this contract and ended his playing career. Since then he has been an assistant coach with the Komoka Kings from the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
