The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1977/78 season was the 13th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition began in September 1977; the final was ultimately played in August 1979. A total of 16 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow won after a year's break for a total eighth time the title.

Mode and participants

The national champions of the game year 1976/77 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played in the knockout system in a two-legged manner. The CSKA Moscow was set for the final, the defending champion TJ Poldi SONP Kladno for the fourth round.
