The IIHF Continental Cup 2002/03 was the sixth edition of the competition held by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The final round, the so-called Super Final , was held in January 2003 in Lugano and Milan .

Five of the eight finalists were seeded. The three other participants in the Super Final were determined in three qualifying rounds.

Attendees

A total of 44 teams from 25 European countries took part in the competition for the Continental Cup.

First round

The tournaments of the first qualifying round were played between September 20 and 22, 2002 at five venues. The winners of the five tournaments qualified for the second round.

Group A

Group A games were played at the Palao de Hiel in Barcelona .

Group B

The tournament venue for Group B was Amsterdam , with Jaap Eden Hal as the venue . The Kazakh representative, Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk , was the clear tournament winner with three wins and moved into the second qualifying round.

Group D

The games in Group D were in the Ledena dvorana Pionir in Serbian Belgrade discharged. The tournament was won by the team of Dunaferr Dunaújváros , who prevailed in the decisive game for the tournament victory 11-0 against HK Red Star Belgrade and thus moved into the second round of the cup. The Hungarian team also kept clean sheets throughout the tournament .

Second round

The tournaments of the second qualifying round were played from October 18 to 20, 2002 at four venues. The respective tournament winners reached the third qualifying round.

Group F.

The Group F games were played in the Patinoire L'île Lacroix in Rouen , France . The tournament had to be canceled on the morning of October 20th due to a defect in the cooling system. The Ayr Scottish Eagles had already won the tournament on matchday two and qualified for the next round. However, since the club from Scotland went bankrupt a short time later, the second-placed Dragons de Rouen took part in the third qualifying round.

Group J was hosted in Belfast , Northern Ireland . All games were played in the 8,000-seat Odyssey Arena . The host Belfast Giants clearly prevailed with three wins and thus reached the Super Final .

Finals

Lokomotive Yaroslavl and Jokerit Helsinki met in the final of the Continental Cup . Due to good goalkeeping performance, the game was only decided in the penalty shoot-out, with Jukka Voutilainen scoring the decisive goal against Russian goalkeeper Yegor Podomazki . Jokerit Helsinki wins the first Continental Cup in the club's history.

The third place match was won by the host HC Lugano against HK Keramin Minsk 5-0, with the first four goals falling in the first period and the game being decided early on.
