Sean Bergenheim (born February 8, 1984 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who was active in the National Hockey League for the New York Islanders , Tampa Bay Lightning , Florida Panthers and Minnesota Wild . In Europe he played for Frölunda HC in the Svenska Hockeyligan , SC Bern in the National League A and Jokerit Helsinki in the SM-liiga . With the Finnish national team , he took part in a large number of tournaments and won a total of seven medals at world championships .

Career

Sean Bergenheim began his career as a hockey player in his Finnish homeland at Jokerit Helsinki , for which he was active in the SM-liiga for a total of three years from 2001 to 2004 . The greatest successes he could celebrate with the team were the Finnish championship title in 2002 and winning the IIHF Continental Cup in the 2002/03 season . During this time he was selected in the first round of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft as a total of 22nd player by the New York Islanders , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League at the beginning of the 2003/04 season before joining the season his ex-club Jokerit Helsinki in Finland.

During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , Bergenheim played exclusively for New York's farm team from the American Hockey League , the Bridgeport Sound Tigers , before scoring nine points in 28 games for New York in the NHL in the 2005/06 season , including four goals, scored.

On August 5, 2006, Bergenheim signed a contract as a free agent with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl from the Russian Super League . Only three months later, the attacker switched to the Swedish Elitserien , where he ended the season at Frölunda HC . In the summer of 2007, Bergenheim returned to his ex-club New York Islanders, for which he played until 2010 and completed another 200 NHL games.

In August 2010, Bergenheim was signed by the Tampa Bay Lightning . On July 1, 2011, he signed a four-year contract with the Florida Panthers .

In February 2015, the Panthers gave him, including a seven-round vote for the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, to the Minnesota Wild , who in turn transferred a third-round vote for the same draft to Florida. Bergenheim ended the season in Minnesota, but without subsequently receiving a new contract. As a result, the Finn returned to Europe once more and joined SC Bern from the National League A ; he signed a contract there until the end of the season with an option for two more years. Bergenheim dropped out in the spring of 2016 due to a concussion and therefore missed the playoffs in which his team won the championship.

On November 4, 2016, he returned to the top Swedish team Frölunda HC . In 2017 he won the Champions Hockey League with the Indians . After two years at Frölunda, he had to end his career in February 2018 due to the aftereffects of several concussions .

International

For Finland , Bergenheim took part in the U18 Junior World Championships in 2001 and 2002 and the U20 Junior World Championships in 2002 , 2003 and 2004 . He was also in Finland's squad at the 2006 , 2007 and 2008 World Cups .
