GKS Katowice is a Polish ice hockey team from Katowice , which was founded in 1964. The ice hockey department belonging to the sports club of the same name plays again in the Ekstraliga in 2016 .

history

The ice hockey department of GKS Katowice was founded in 1920 as an independent club under the name Gornik Katowice, before it was connected to GKS Katowice in 1964 after a club merger. The team was one of the best teams in the Ekstraliga , especially from the late 1950s to the early 1970s , when the team won the Polish championship title six times within 13 years . In the 2004/05 season , the team was relegated to the second-rate I league . In 2013 she managed to return to the top division. There she reached the playoff quarter-finals in the first season after promotion with a seventh place in the preliminary round. But as early as 2015, the team had to accept relegation to the I league as the bottom of the table with only two wins from 48 games. The team has been back in the Ekstraliga since 2016 and was able to reach the playoffs straight away, where they failed in the quarter-finals with 4-0 defeats at eventual runner-up GKS Tychy . In 2019 the team won the main round, but then failed in the playoff semifinals to KS Cracovia .
