The Mediolanum Forum (full name: Mediolanum Forum di Assago ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Italian municipality of Assago , metropolitan city of Milan , in the Lombardy region . The hall is mainly used for basketball , ice hockey and tennis . The arena is the home stadium of the basketball club Olimpia Milano from the Lega Basket Serie A .

In addition to the sporting events, concerts , exhibitions , conferences and shows ( musical , comedy, etc.) take place.

history

The arena with an area of ​​40,000 m² was opened on October 26, 1990 and today has a maximum capacity of 12,700 spectators.

In 1994 the 58th men's ice hockey world championship was held in the Forum di Assago, as was the superfinal of the IIHF Continental Cup 2002/03 , which was played in Assago in addition to the Resega in Lugano . In April 2007, World Wrestling Entertainment made a guest appearance in the arena with the shows Raw and SmackDown . Two years later, the 2009 World Boxing Championships took place in the Forum.

In January 2009, the name of the stadium was changed from Datch Forum to the current name Mediolanum Forum after the Mediolanum banking group acquired the naming rights. Mediolanum is also the Latin name for the nearby city of Milan .

In December 2011 and 2012, the women's tennis exhibition La Grande Sfida ( German  The Big Challenge ) with Serena and Venus Williams , Francesca Schiavone , Flavia Pennetta , Ana Ivanović , Roberta Vinci , Sara Errani and Marija Sharapowa took place in the forum . After a break in 2013, the four former tennis players Ivan Lendl , John McEnroe , Michael Chang and Goran Ivanišević competed in the Mediolanum Forum for a new edition of the event in October 2014 .

On May 16 and 18, 2014, the Final Four of the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 took place in the Mediolanum Forum . In September and October 2014 the forum will be one of the venues for the women's volleyball world championship . In March 2018 the hall will be the venue for the figure skating world championships .

The Mediolanum Forum is a member of the European Arenas Association (EAA).

Concerts

Since the opening, numerous well-known artists have appeared in the forum, including Celine Dion , Cher , Janet Jackson , Prince and U2 . In 1998 the MTV Europe Music Awards took place in the Assago arena. For the second time the MTV Europe Music Awards 2015 will take place in the forum.
