Toni Sihvonen (born February 19, 1971 in Seinäjoki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and current coach .

Career

Toni Sihvonen started his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of KooKoo . From there he moved to Reipas Lahti , for whose professional team he made his debut in the second-rate I-divisioona in the 1989/90 season . With Reipas he rose straight away in his rookie year in the SM-liiga , in which he spent the following three seasons as a regular at Reipas. From 1993 to 1995 the center was active for TPS Turku in the SM-liiga, while it came in parallel to some assignments for its farm team Kiekko-67 in the I-divisioona. With TPS he won the Finnish championship title for the first time in his career in the 1994/95 season . Following this success, he moved within the top Finnish league to HIFK Helsinki , with whom he was also Finnish champion in the 1997/98 season .

For the 2001/02 season Sihvonen went abroad for the first time and joined AIK Solna from the Swedish Elitserien . For the team he scored 17 points scorer in the main round in 48 games, including four goals. In the Kvalserien , however, he and his team had to accept relegation to the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan , whereupon the former national player returned to his Finnish homeland, where he was on the ice for Jokerit Helsinki in the 2002/03 season. After a one-year break from ice hockey, he won the Finnish championship title with Kärpät Oulu in the 2004/05 season . He spent the following two years at his ex-club from Lahti, which in the meantime competed as a Pelicans in the SM-liiga. In the 2007/08 season he went to Alba Volán Székesfehérvár from the Austrian ice hockey league . At the end of the season he also took part in the game of the Hungarian ice hockey league with the team and won the national championship title with the team . The veteran last ran from 2008 to 2010 for Vaasan Sport in the Mestis , which was meanwhile the new second Finnish division. In the 2008/09 season he was with Vaasan Sport Mestis champion. Following the 2009/10 season , he ended his active career at the age of 39.

Since the 2010/11 season Sihvonen has worked as assistant coach for his former club Kärpät Oulu from the SM-liiga.

International

For Finland , Sihvonen took part in the junior division exclusively in the U18 European Junior Championship in 1989 , where he and his team won the bronze medal. In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1999 , 2000 and 2001 World Championships . At the World Championships in 1999 and 2001 he won the silver medal with his country and the bronze medal at the 2000 World Championships.
