The 1989/90 season was the 16th season of the I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey division . Ässät Pori and Hockey-Reipas Lahti qualified for the SM-liiga-relegation , in which both achieved promotion. Koo-Vee and Hokki Salo were relegated to the third division.

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 44 games. The two first placed qualified for the SM-liiga-relegation. The last two placed in the main round were relegated to the third division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
