The 1999/2000 season was the 26th and final season of the I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey division . Kärpät Oulu , Vaasan Sport and Diskos Jyväskylä qualified for the SM-liiga relegation , in which Kärpät Oulu achieved promotion. Ahmat Hyvinkää and SaPKo Savonlinna were relegated to the third division. For the 2000/01 season , the league was replaced by the newly founded Mestis as the second highest Finnish division.

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 48 games. The first place in the main round qualified directly for the SM liiga relegation. The teams in places 2 to 9 initially contested playoffs, the two winners of which were also allowed to take part in the SM-liiga relegation. The last two placed had to compete in the relegation to avoid relegation. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
