The 1978/79 season was the fifth season of I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey division . SaiPa Lappeenranta and FoPS Forssa qualified for the SM liiga relegation , in which both teams failed.

In the main round, each of the ten teams played a total of 36 games. The two first placed qualified for the SM-liiga-relegation. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
