The 1987/88 season was the 14th season of the I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey division . HPK Hämeenlinna and SaiPa Lappeenranta rose directly to the SM-liiga . Kiekko-Reipas Lahti qualified for the SM liiga relegation , in which it failed. VaKi Vantaa was relegated to the third division.

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 44 games. The first two placed went straight to the SM-liiga. The third placed qualified for the SM-liiga-relegation. The last placed in the main round rose to the third division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
