The 1996/97 season was the 23rd season of the I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey division . The six best-placed teams qualified for the SM liiga relegation , in which all six teams failed. The four last placed were relegated directly to the third division. In addition, the teams failed in places 11 and 12 in the relegation and were also relegated.

In the main round, each of the 16 teams played a total of 30 games. The eight best-placed teams in the main round qualified for the final round, the six best teams in turn qualified for the SM liiga relegation. The other eight teams in the main round completed a relegation round, the last four of which were relegated to the third division, while the teams in positions 11 and 12 of the relegation round had to compete in relegation to avoid relegation. The results from the main round were carried over to the final or relegation round. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
