The 1979/80 season was the sixth season of the I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey league . HPK Hämeenlinna and SaiPa Lappeenranta qualified for the SM liiga relegation . While SaiPa Lappeenranta achieved promotion to the SM-liiga, HPK Hämeenlinna stayed in the I-divisioona.

In the main round, each of the ten teams played a total of 36 games. The two first placed qualified for the SM-liiga-relegation. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
