The 1982/83 season was the ninth season of the I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey division . HPK Hämeenlinna and JoKP Joensuu qualified for the SM liiga relegation . While HPK Hämeenlinna achieved promotion to the SM-liiga, JoKP Joensuu stayed in the I-divisioona. SaPKo Savonlinna rose to the third division.

In the main round, each of the ten teams played a total of 36 games. The six best-placed teams qualified for the playoffs, with the two first-placed teams in the main round not having to compete until the second playoff round. The two playoff winners finally qualified for the SM liiga relegation. The last placed in the main round rose to the third division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
