The 1985/86 season was the twelfth season of I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey division . KalPa Kuopio rose as a second division champion directly to the SM-liiga . TuTo Hockey , KooKoo and HPK Hämeenlinna qualified for the SM-liiga relegation , in which all three teams failed. TJV Vantaa was relegated to the third division.

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 44 games. The first placed rose directly to the SM-liiga. The teams in places 2 to 4 qualified for the SM liiga relegation. The last placed in the main round rose to the third division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
