The 1985/86 SM-liiga season was the eleventh season of the Finnish SM-liiga . Finnish champion was for the ninth time and the fifth time since the introduction of the SM-liiga Tappara Tampere , while SaiPa was relegated to the second division.

Regular season

mode

The ten teams of the SM-liiga initially played against each other in 36 seasonal games. While the first four teams qualified for the play-offs , the penultimate had to play against the teams in places two to four of the second division to keep up. The last one was automatically relegated to the second division and was replaced by the second division champions. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.

Play-offs

The semi-finals were played in the “best of five” mode, the game for third place in the “best of three” mode . The final, on the other hand, took place in the "Best-of-Seven" mode .

SM liiga relegation

The penultimate of the SM-liiga main round and the teams in places two to four of the second division played in a two-way round for promotion or relegation. In the relegation, Jokerit secured relegation after winning the decider against TuTo with equal points 4-1.
