The 1970/71 season was the 40th season of the Finnish SM-sarja . Ässät Pori became champion for the third time in the club's history . SaPKo Savonlinna and Kiekko-67 Turku were relegated to the 2nd division.

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 22 games. The six best-placed teams in the main round qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played out. The results from the main round were carried over to the final round. The last two in the main round were relegated to the 2nd division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
