The SM-liiga season 1975/76 was the first season of the Finnish SM-liiga . The first champion of the new league was the TPS Turku , which won the second Finnish championship in the club's history. Vaasan Sport finished last in relegation and was relegated to the second division.

Regular season

The ten teams of the SM-liiga initially played two double rounds of 18 games each. While the first four teams qualified for the play-offs , the last two had to play against the two best second division teams to stay in the league. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.

SM liiga relegation

The last two placed in the SM-liiga main round and the two best second division teams played for promotion and relegation in return legs. Since Kiekko-Reipas and Kärpät each scored six points, they played against each other in a playoff, which Kieeko-Reipas won 4-3 afterwards.
