Career as a coach

After his career as a player, Jortikka first coached the Finnish U20 national team , with which he won the gold medal at the Junior World Cup in 1987 . Then Jortikka took over in the summer of 1988 as a coach at his ex-club TPS Turku , with whom he had become champions as a player in 1976. He led this in his first season as a coach to the championship, which he was able to repeat in 1990. In addition, Jortikka reached second place in the European Cup with the team in 1990 and was awarded the Kalevi Numminen trophy for the best coach for the first time, which he received a total of five times in his career. In 1991, the former defender completed the title hat-trick with Turku. He then moved to league rivals HPK Hämeenlinna , whom he led to the 1993 runner-up championship.

After only one season, Jortikka left the club again to coach SC Bern from the Swiss National League A. After the season the coach gained further experience abroad when he coached Malmö IF from the Swedish Elitserien in the 1994/95 season . He then took over in the 1995/96 season JYP Jyväskylä , with whom he missed the playoffs in a disappointing season. After a year off, Jortikka signed a second time in Malmö, but was again without a title. Thereupon Jortikka finally took over the coaching position at Turku for the second time in 1998, with which he again managed the title hat trick in 1999, 2000 and 2001. He also achieved third place in the European Hockey League with the team in 2000 .

After his renewed success with Turku, Jortikka paused two years before he signed with Jokerit Helsinki in 2003 , which led to the runner-up in 2005. He then returned to Turku, where he trained TPS from 2005 to 2007.

Between the end of 2009 and November 2010 he was again in charge of Jokerit Helsinki and was also the head coach of the Finnish U20 national team. In April 2011 he was signed by Amur Khabarovsk from the Continental Hockey League and led the team to the 2012 play-offs. In December 2012, Jortikka was released from his contract after Amur had slipped to 11th place in the Eastern Conference of the KHL.

For the following season he was head coach of the newly founded KHL participant Admiral Vladivostok , but resigned from this position on November 30, 2013 for family reasons. He then worked as a consultant at HK Ugra Khanty-Mansiysk before being appointed coach of the Finnish U20 juniors in 2014.
