The SM-liiga season 1989/90 was the 15th season of the Finnish SM-liiga . Finnish champion was for the fourth time and for the third time since the introduction of the SM-liiga TPS Turku , while KooKoo and JoKP were relegated to the second division.
Regular season
mode
The ten teams of the SM-liiga played against each other in 44 season games. While the first six teams qualified for the play-offs, the last two had to play against the two best second division teams to stay in the league. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.

Play-offs
Places 1 and 2 were qualified for the semi-finals and places 3-6 for the quarter-finals of the play-offs. The winners of the semi-finals made it to the final while the losers played for third place in the small final.
The quarter-finals were played in the “best-of-three” mode , the semifinals in the “best-of-five” mode, the game for third place in a single play-off. The final, on the other hand, took place in the "Best-of-Seven" mode .

SM liiga relegation
The last two placed in the SM-liiga main round and the two best second division teams played in the "best-of-five" mode for promotion or relegation. Both KooKoo and JoKP lost their relegation duels and were relegated to the second division.
