Markus Ketterer (born August 23, 1967 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Färjestad BK in the Swedish Elitserien from 1985 to 1999, among others .

Career

Markus Ketterer began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Jokerit Helsinki . From the 1985/86 season he was a substitute goalkeeper for the professional team of Jokerit in the SM-liiga , but was initially not used. After the team had to accept relegation to the second-class I divisioona, he played regularly in professional hockey for the first time in the 1987/88 season. With a catch quota of 90.7 percent, he was able to convince in the second division and was signed by the SM-liiga participant TPS Turku . With this he won the Finnish championship title in his first three seasons as a regular goalkeeper in the top Finnish league . He was able to put himself in the limelight especially in the 1990/91 season and won the Urpo-Ylönen trophy as the best goalkeeper in the league . At the European level, he and his team took second place in the European Cup in 1990 .

For the 1991/92 season Ketterer returned to Jokerit Helsinki, which in the meantime had returned to the SM-liiga. With Jokerit he was instant champion, which meant the goalkeeper himself the fourth championship title for the fourth year in a row. Subsequently, teams in North America became aware of him and he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 1992 in the fifth round as a total of 107 players by the Buffalo Sabers . Initially, however, the national player stayed with Jokerit and took third place in the European Cup with his team in 1993. He then went to the United States, but was from 1993 to 1995 exclusively for Buffalo's farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League between the posts, so he hired at Färjestad BK in the Swedish Elitserien . With the FBK he was Swedish champion in the 1996/97 season . In the European Hockey League , however, he was eliminated with his team in the group stage. From 1997 to 1999, the 1992 Olympian played again for his hometown club Jokerit in the SM-liiga, before ending his career at the age of 31. In 2005 he was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame as the 160th player.

International

For Finland , Ketterer only took part in the Junior World Championship in 1987 in the junior division. In this he led his team to win the gold medal and he himself was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament. In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the World Championships in 1989 , 1990 , 1991 , 1992 , 1993 and 1996 and at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . At the 1991 World Cup he was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament, at the World Cup a year later he was runner-up with Finland and was elected to the All-Star Team of the World Cup. In addition, he represented the senior team at the Canada Cup in 1991 and at the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 , with the latter remaining as a substitute goalkeeper without use.
