Baynard Kendrick

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baynard Hardwick Kendrick (born April 8, 1894 in Philadelphia , † March 22, 1977 in Ocala ) was an American writer . He became famous for his detective novels and novels , some of which were made into films. He also wrote under the pen name Richard Hayward .

Life

Kendrick was the first American to travel to Canada at the beginning of World War I and join the Canadian armed forces there . During his missions - u. a. in England and France - one of his companions was injured and blinded. During a visit to St. Dunstan's Rehabilitation Center for the Blind in England, he met an English soldier who had the remarkable gift of being able to tell Kendrick many details about himself despite his blindness. During World War II , Kendrick served as an instructor for blind war veterans .

Baynard Kendrick created from his experiences from the thirties "a classic figure in detective literature, the blind Duncan Maclain ( called Longstreet ), who compensates for his blindness with almost unbelievable sensory performances, knowledge and ability to combine and therefore" can see in the dark "" . Supported by his partner Spud Savage and the two German shepherds Schnucke and Dreist , he solved Whodunit crime cases in twelve novels and three short stories . Kendrick's interest in the history of Florida gave rise to an almost equally well-known series protagonist , Deputy Sheriff Miles Standish Rice , whose experiences were captured in three novels.

Baynard Kendrick was a co-founder of the American writers' association Mystery Writers of America (MWA), had membership card number 1, and was also elected the association's first president in 1945.
