The 1953/54 season was the 23rd season of the Finnish SM-sarja . Master was for the second time in the club history TBK Tampere . Ilves Tampere and the Kuopion PS were relegated to the 2nd division.

The main round was held in two groups of five teams each. The first two in the group qualified for the championship final. The two runners-up met in the game for third place. The last placed in each group were relegated to the 2nd division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
